I can imagine my reaction if I see a striped human being for the first time.
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

When I get very tan I can see stripes on my shoulders. Very very faint. Probably not Blaschko's Lines, and more of me being mixed/

u/Pinkysrage 4d ago
Nah, that would be a zorse. It’s a thing, but they retain the wildness of their parents and are not easy to own, train or ride. Horses are funny, they are so big, but damn if they see a deer on the trail it’s bug eyes and standing at high alert. When you feel your horse grow six inches, it’s seen something so watch out.

Some animals interpret contrasting stripes on other animals as an innate sign of danger.
For example many snakes take advantage of this. Their stripe patterns scare off other animals - even humans.
The horse is scared of the striped animal.

Horses are scared of everything, mine's still scared by the donkeys he sees almost everyday

To be fair donkey can be absolute jerks. Maybe the donkey did something to scare your horse.
17
u/AppropriateCranberry 4d ago
Yeah they are way tougher than horses, but in this case no, they never did something, they're not even in the same pasture, he was afraid of Shetland ponies at first, I think it's the "huh they're like me but not really" that scare him haha

u/Hqrules213 3d ago
Might be dangerous for the mare, zebras can actually be tougher and more aggressive than most horse breeds, which is why there aren't that many domesticated.
It's pretty much due to their natural environment they end up needing to be more aggressive and sturdier pound for pound compared to horses after surviving in Africa around predators like lions and crocs or even dangerous fellow herbivores like hippos, rhinos, and elephants.

Don’t worry, zebras can’t be domesticated, so they won’t be taking any jobs away from you horses.
Also, when clicking the above link, pay no mind to this picture.

That hprse is wondering who let the crackhead with barcode tattoos in, and is slightly worried for its safety.
The zebra on the other hand is rolling up like "Ya got some nice digs here pendejo, hope ya don't mind me setting up in here."

Horses have that reaction to donkeys, mules, and just about any other non-horse animal they see. I used to ride a horse that was terrified of a donkey along the trail… and if it brayed my horse would BOLT away in fear.
