Never understood the hate James gets. His music may not be your style, but you can't deny the talent.

Plus he's ruthlessly hilarious on social media.

u/Cdog1223 4d ago

Any dude that does strictly emotional music gets hate, probably because people see them as lame which sucks when they are so talented.

22

u/Humble-Quote-1859 4d ago

If we hated everyone who made music that wasn’t to our taste the world would be a … ok, I see the problem.

18

u/AbsolutelyUnlikely 3d ago

I honestly haven't thought of him since "You're Beautiful" was a hit like 20 years ago, but yeah this was an impressive and moving performance. New found respect for him.

14

u/Aggravating_Skill497 3d ago

To be fair, there was a period that advert with his song on was on every 2min...then he just started trolling the haters for shits and giggles.

Dudes amazing. Not desperately pushing songs constantly, just enjoying the fact his voice is mint and the hate that causes.

u/Outside-Drag-3031 3d ago

God I can listen to Back to Bedlam for days, it's such a good album. Always been confused why people rag on him

3

u/InevitableLife252 3d ago

Most people are terrified of their shadow.

Not the shade we produce.

1

u/CaliKindalife 3d ago

It's his voice. It's an acquired taste at best.

1

u/GimmieGummies 3d ago

Yes, thank you for putting it out there and in a tactful manner no less.

It absolutely is his voice. He's got that grandma/billy goat thing going on... 🐐👵

1

u/BKStephens 3d ago

You hate him because of the sound of his voice?

1

u/CaliKindalife 2d ago

What? When did I say I hate him? I believe I offered an opinion as to why people don't like him.

-1

u/BKStephens 2d ago

You offered it as if it were a statement of fact.

"It's his voice..." as opposed to "Maybe it's because of his voice..."

0

u/CaliKindalife 2d ago

That's cause it's not a maybe. Some of the people who don't like him, it's cause his voice. That's why they don't like him. Cause his voice.

1

u/enkae7317 3d ago

He's good but I only know one song from him lol. 1hit wonder?

1

u/BKStephens 3d ago

Jot in my experience. I'm in Australia, maybe we heard more of him here?

I remember when my Moms cancer came back (4th time) she had me listen to this song. It was her way of saying she knew her time was coming to an end.

If I’m not mistaken his father also passed of cancer.

Fuck cancer

55

u/MrPigcho 4d ago

James Blunt's father did suffer from Kidney cancer but received a transplant from James Blunt's cousin and is alive and well. Still, I think this song resonates for everyone affected by cancer, regardless of the outcome

9

u/RDcsmd 3d ago

I hope James made his cousin rich

37

u/Sharpymarkr 3d ago

Damn this cover was hard to listen to.

My wife passed away at 34 from cancer in August 2023.

12

u/good_from_afar 3d ago

Holy shit dude, sorry to hear. hang in there.

11

u/Sharpymarkr 3d ago

Thank you friend. Hanging on is about all you can do.

10

u/samplema 3d ago

Awful. I was 29 when my 32 year old wife died of cancer almost 12 years ago. It gets easier but it never gets easy. Connect with your family if you have one and know there’s no right way to do this. Wish you the best.

4

u/Sharpymarkr 3d ago

Thank you for the kind words friend.

I just hate going through each day without her. it's a pretty empty, purposeless life without her in it.

8

u/youngsyr 3d ago

Heart breaking. I hope you're doing as well as you can.

5

u/EvilWaterman 3d ago

Sorry man :-(

3

u/Western_Spirit392 3d ago

Sorry for your loss.

6

u/Sharpymarkr 3d ago

Thank you friend.

2

u/Western_Spirit392 3d ago

When it rains look for rainbows and when its darkest look at the stars. Keep your chin up.

11

u/redrumretsim 4d ago

What I've read - and I might be wrong as my sources are Youtube comments - is that his father was sick and dying from renal failure but had a kidney transplant in time and survived.

2

u/Blizzpoint 3d ago

Fuck cancer

63

u/kayzerkimmie 4d ago

I'm mostly into blues music, but this guy's lyrics and music in general is something else. Really like him. Btw, he seems to have a great sense of humour too. Just read his tweets

11

u/BreakingThoseCankles 3d ago

One of my favorite phrases ever

"Me and James Blunt both agree, 'YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL'!"

7

u/RRSC14 3d ago

PLEASE check out Iam Tongi’s version of this song for his American Idol audition. If you like these lyrics and blues music you will love Iam’s version. Heartbreakingly beautiful.

9

u/powertripp82 3d ago

Before this morning I had never heard this song before. I’ve listened to it three times now. This live version, the music video, and now your suggestion for that cover. I absolutely cried every time. What a beautiful song

Here is the version from the Idol audition. You can skip the intro, but I feel it adds some context. Strong recommend if someone is looking for something to watch this morning

16

u/Donnie_77 4d ago

Hope he will be okay. Hugs for you and your dad

7

u/LoneHistoryNerd 3d ago

Thank you ❤️ it means alot 🫂

2

u/SorryButButt 3d ago

Sending lots of hugs. Hope you are both ok

35

u/happychillmoremusic 4d ago

As someone who lost their dad to Covid and someone who loved james blunt countless years ago but totally forgot about him, this was great.

33

u/Penguings 3d ago

I can’t listen to him without crying- that’s my issue with James Blunt. So many of his songs have hit me in hard times and this mother fucker always does it to me.

17

u/Penguings 3d ago

I just listen to this I’m balling. I sat with my Dad in 2017 and said bye to him- he didn’t tell us he had cancer till it was too late, he didn’t want to scare us. When JB says just two grown men saying good bye- waterfalls.

25

u/DulcisUltio 4d ago

I heard his song 3 days before my Dad passed. To say it hits hard every time is the understatement of the millenium. Truly a beautiful song. <3

24

u/gohomepat 3d ago

Nothing against James Blunt but American Idol winner Iam Tongi really made this song his own. If y’all are somehow in the mood for a good cry, watch this young man’s audition.

thanks for sharing.

Edit: Damnit, just found that he did a duet with James Blunt too. Very emotional - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9hdHDXyo-8

10

u/ScienceAndLience 3d ago

Well shit, thank you, I been a bit tear congested and this helped clear me out

2

u/FreshHawaii 3d ago

I used this for my grandpa’s memorial video. Captures the feelings exactly with how he was like my dad.

1

u/The_Virginia_Creeper 3d ago

Wow this really hit something I didn’t know I had. Shit

18

u/Hicklethumb 3d ago

13 years later and thinking of that goodbye really caught me off guard now. I really wasn't ready to have an ugly cry today. Thanks OP

3

u/Camman1 3d ago

Same dude

1

u/SnooCauliflowers5512 3d ago

Is 3 a crowd?? Same here Fuck!

1

u/phazedoubt 3d ago

I saved the video and muted sound. I am not ready to cry like that right now.

9

u/ToxicHazard- 4d ago

What a beautifully heartbreaking song

10

u/collegekid1357 3d ago

7am and I’m already bawling my eyes out lol.

1

u/asianova 3d ago

I got tears in my coffee

8

u/FuklzTheDrnkClwn 3d ago

My dad died of cancer really recently. This song really cut through and fucked me up.

7

u/kinkysmart 3d ago

Jesus fucking warn someone before you lay that out. Fuck. I can't do shit for the rest of the day and I can't be crying in my office. WTF, man.

5

u/HonestWeekend89 3d ago

back to bedlam is and always will be one of my favorite albums. he’s so talented.

4

u/hyzerKite 3d ago

It’s too early in the day to cry this hard. That is a heart piercer.

I always thought Jimmy Blunt was a rapper./s

3

u/VonMillersThighs 3d ago

Lost my dad last year and this just hit me like a ton of bricks.

2

u/SpaceNasty 3d ago

I'm not fucking crying 😭

2

u/SnooCauliflowers5512 3d ago

To hell with all his haters! His music has always helped me to get through hard times. He seem like a awesome dude, plus he was also one of the first troops into Kosovo ..Capt. Blunt ,great as always

2

u/VoyevodaBoss 3d ago

THE BLUNTERS ARE BACK BABY

2

u/Unique_Jackfruit_166 3d ago

He is awesome

2

u/fomo_rian 3d ago

Fucking unbelievable.

1

u/noeljb 3d ago

Wow! That hit close to home. I ju

1

u/lennycooke 3d ago

I think James is an undeniably talented performer, but I'm not a fan of his high pitched, nasally voice.

1

u/knowigot_that808 3d ago

saw that hawaiian guy on American Idol sing this and almost cried

1

u/DarylStenn 3d ago

Seen him perform this live twice, not a dry eye in the audience.

1

u/Mainemannak 3d ago

Wow, what a powerful and personal song. Just beautiful. My dad is battling a chronic autoimmune disease and it effect his muscles and his ability to control them. He has always been a man who could physically power his way through life’s challenges, so seeing him so weak now is just crushing. Now, it is my turn to be strong for him.

1

u/DanishPsychoBoy 3d ago

While James Blunt's music has never really been my go-to, it does hold a special place in my heart as my mum was a huge fan of his and we listened to his music quite often on family trips. This October it will be 4 years since she died at a far too young age. Grandma (father mum) died late last year, and my grandpa (mums dad) died in the spring of this year making it so that there are no more grandparents. My dad is the one I have left (besides siblings). I cannot listen to this song, even though it is on my main Spotify playlist, because it just makes me think about when it becomes his turn, and it brings me to tears to think about it.

If you still have your parents/grandparents, and have a good/ok relationship with them, make sure to spend time with them and tell them that you love them, it can all be gone in the blink of an eye.

1

u/bunnahabhain25 3d ago

I've never been a big fan, but I heard this for the first time a couple of months ago after losing my dad. It breaks me every time.

1

u/DistinctPenalty8434 3d ago

😭 James blunt, you son of a bi#$%. #Bravo

1

u/Spirited_Peen 3d ago

My dad passed a few weeks ago and this song was therapy. Fuck, that was good.

1

u/nomamesgueyz 3d ago

Good on him

1

u/Oisdealbh 3d ago

I lost my dad this year, two weeks before I turned 30. I wasn’t able to say goodbye to him. I had no idea what this song was, but I guess it was time for some unscheduled ugly crying.

Hug your parents.

1

u/Illcmys3lf0ut 3d ago

My mom got taken by brain cancer. F*CK cancer. Great song. Who’s cutting onions, btw.

I’ll see myself out

1

u/neazwaflcasd 3d ago

Music is quite powerful in how it can evoke such raw, deep, emotional reactions. My dad passed away yesterday and I'd held it together until hearing this... it opened the floodgates of my emotion. I'll miss my father dearly

1

u/Head-Specialist-6033 3d ago

I’ve been to many concerts in my life and James’ was one of the best. A little old theatre in Toronto about 10 years ago. Such an talented artist and I hope to see him again.

1

u/TheStraggletagg 3d ago

My brother introduced me to this song a couple of weeks after our dad died. Still gets me emotional months later.

1

u/Asleep-Pension5546 3d ago

Damn..Kids with Dad issues anthem right there. Reminds me to call him. He won't open up but at least I can remind him even with his shortcomings he wasn't all bad & he's loved

1

u/uzi966 3d ago

My ears hurt

1

u/nyynyg 3d ago

Wow! Emotionally moving

1

u/ramrod254 3d ago

Fuck man. That shit hit me hard. WOW.

1

u/puddlesofmoney 3d ago

Fuck, my dad is sick and this made me ugly cry

1

u/usriusclark 3d ago

Beautiful song; I’m glad he wrote it, but Iam Tongi’s version hits so much harder for me.

1

u/T_Dink 3d ago

I played this at my dads funeral. Even though we were not close it was hard and this song just has so much behind it for me.

1

u/damosaurus 2d ago

this song came out as my father in law was in hospital dying.....it always gets me. I love James

1

u/Nightshade111 2d ago

Damn, I've never cried before but this was as close as I've ever come

1

u/sonofaww2pilot 2d ago

For someone who spent time with his father (also my hero) during his last days, this song just tears at my sole……🥲

1

u/AlBundysPants 9h ago

Absolutely beautiful song.

-6

u/Logical_Farm256 3d ago

ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz

-8

u/k2nxx 4d ago

what happened why he not make new songs anymore?

5

u/Ok_March7423 4d ago

Unlike his last album in Oct 2023 which he is currently touring with....

0

u/Eerayo 3d ago

Yeah but why hasn't he made any music since then??

2

u/Ok_March7423 3d ago

Did you forget "/s"?

-3

u/Eerayo 3d ago

I thought it was a fairly obvious joke.

-57

u/-_-_____-----___ 4d ago edited 4d ago

Take a balloon and fill it with air.
Then pinch one end so it resembles a vagina and slowly let air of the opening until it starts sqeaking.

That, is what James Blunt sounds like to me.

No idea what the song is about.

14

u/YourLovelyMother 4d ago

That's very unfortunate, it's got a quite beautiful message.

8

u/Fantastic-Safety4604 4d ago

How sad for you.

2

u/MintyClinch 4d ago

dying father

-70

u/phan_o_phunny 4d ago

That dude looks good for 100 years old and 70 years past relevant

5

u/nuu_uut 3d ago

who the fuck cares about 'relevant'

-8

u/phan_o_phunny 3d ago

Um... You sure you know that word?

2

u/nuu_uut 3d ago

Yes. Just not a tik tok brained dumbass who cares about what someone's "relevancy" is when they're simply featured in a video showing their craft.

1

u/phan_o_phunny 3d ago

Haha, who cares if he's relevant... Haha, go back to dikdok, you're projecting too hard

-83

u/Human_Taxidermist 4d ago

I'm sorry... the only thing next fucking level about James Blunt is how astoundingly annoying his voice is. I appreciate what he's doing with this song and such it's just... that shrill voice.

31

u/Siilk13 4d ago

Respectfully, you're trippin my dude

7

u/Fantastic-Safety4604 4d ago

It’s not shrill, it’s resonant. His pitch is awesome and his phrasing impeccable. Nobody’s voice is going to appeal to everyone but I can tell you that his is perceived as beautiful by a great many people.
