these large caskets are already so bad for the environment ugh >< very pretty job and I imagine it was cathartic to do but it really shouldn’t go in the ground

They go in a concrete vault first so the type of casket doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t touch the earth. They’re still a huge waste of space, but the vaults keep anything from getting in the ground.

the vault will inevitably crack as everything starts breaking down and all the varnishes and metal fittings can leach gross stuff into the soil ><

eta: link to a study for those who downvoted. heavy metals are found in cemetery soil and cause environmental problems as well as health concerns for those who live near contaminated areas. There are so many new green burial options though - my favorites are alkaline hydrolysis and terramation. you don’t need to give up your own funeral traditions in order to participate in a greener death either, as most funeral homes have caskets and vessels you can rent for the service. things to think about
