I thought one of the advantages of team sports is that those of poor character can be shunned, despite their apparent athletic abilities. Just because he is eligible or even talented doesn't mean he has to be given a spot. "Criminal" is not a protected class.
Rich in volleyballs? I am not sure if this guy's parents are wealthy. With Olympics you do not earn that much money, it is just for sports and your ego.
I was shocked by this as well. I follow Dutch volleybal and had never heard of the guy either which I thought was strange. But I googled and he is a beachvolleyballer. That makes a lot of difference, he has a partner and because of their track record they automatically qualify for the olympics.
So it wasn't a team that qualified (you'd hope he wouldn't ever be picked for selection of the team) but him specifically. Apparently if you qualify that way, no one can really stop you. You have to right to go.
As a Dutch person I feel ashamed that he is going to represent my country. If they can't be stopped from participating, at least he shouldn't be allowed to represent a country as literally one of the worst kind of criminals there is.
I sure as hell will be rooting for him to lose any game and any social standing that he may have gained by being allowed to continue to play sports after so gruesomly ruining that girls life.
