21

u/ERedfieldh 5d ago

The OG anime is the trope codifier for so many things.

9

u/Inner-Light-75 5d ago

The original from 1978 or so....and the second one from about a year or two later.

16

u/themanfromvulcan 5d ago

They remade the series in 2012 and it’s amazing.

5

u/Inner-Light-75 5d ago

Haven't seen that one yet, heard about it and I'm kind of afraid of it. They have remade so many things and ruined them....

Is there a place that streams it and the other Star blazers??

15

u/themanfromvulcan 5d ago

So I was pleasantly surprised. It’s very well done. It’s on Crunchyroll in Canada. It has more character development and more female characters than the original. The dubbed English version is quite good but they keep the Japanese names this time so Captain Avatar is now Captain Okita(which was his name in the original Japanese version).

One clever change is they explain an animation error in the original show - some of the enemy Gammilon leaders looked human. And later others had blue faces. This is explained in the new show that there are second class citizens who are from conquered civilizations and some look human. But only the pure Gamillon race is blue skinned.

I love the original series but the new one is very very good.

1

u/Inner-Light-75 5d ago

I pretty much stayed away from Crunchyroll so far. I don't remember why.

I have an account at Anyime (spelling?) so I can watch transformers rescue bots, and something else.... Never watch much either one of them for some reason. Don't seem to remember liking the app very much....

1

u/Lortekonto 4d ago

Because the app and site is terrible.

Like I use it, because it have lots of good anime, but the app is just pure shit.

I don’t understand how it can be so hard to use money to actuelly improve your streaming app.

5

u/Buzz_Alderaan 5d ago

The remake nailed it. Great animation, fantastic story, as long as you don't watch the dub you will probably think it's amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6LFkMniuTk

No, really, don't watch the dub... please... its really bad... I think.... I couldn't make it past the first episode when they directly translate a japanese sailing song and try to sing it.... without any rhyme scheme or meter.

3

u/Rjs617 5d ago

Do not worry. I was a fan of the original, and the remake is fantastic. The Comet Empire season goes off the rails a little in the last few episodes, but the two seasons of the remake are both awesome.

I ended up buying the remake on iTunes/Apple TV so I could watch it. It was expensive, but I’m glad I did. I don’t know if it’s available elsewhere for cheaper.

2

u/SAGNUTZ 4d ago

I watched them both on youtube for free. But it couldve been one of them rotating movies list situations

2

u/Sulphur99 5d ago

That version is also in Super Robot Wars V btw, in case you want to see Yamato cruising around with several Gundams in tow

2

u/dansdata 5d ago

The 2010 movie's decent, too.

(Yes, the thing that you're mainly watching the movie to see happens. More than once! :-)

1

u/Inner-Light-75 4d ago

And what am I watching the movie for?

2

u/dansdata 3d ago

The thing that means Space Battleship Yamato could probably one-shot the Death Star. :-)

2

u/Inner-Light-75 3d ago

Ah!! The firing of the wave motion device!!

4

u/BHTAelitepwn 5d ago

isnt it from starcraft?

4

u/aRandomFox-II 4d ago

It's a classic anime "Space Battleship Yamato". The battlecruisers from StarCraft (including the Yamato Cannon) are a reference to the anime.

4

u/BHTAelitepwn 4d ago

i always thought it was a reference to the yamato class battleship in ww2 era. oh well, thats cool too

4

u/unfnknblvbl 4d ago

Well the space Battleship was made from the original Yamato, so yes?

2

u/aRandomFox-II 4d ago

The Space Battleship is the IRL Yamato battleship. In the show they took the hull of the shipwreck, repaired it, converted it into a spaceship, and refitted it with advanced weaponry such as lasers, missles, particle cannons, and most importantly, the Wave Motion Gun.

2

u/MudIsland 5d ago

Ooh. What was the name of that show? Is it available anywhere?

4

u/DoctorGarfanzo 5d ago

r/starblazers for info

3

2

u/weaseltorpedo 5d ago

would 5000 Yamato class non-space battleships stood end to end be enough to reach space?

assume they don't fall over or collapse.

9

u/biglefty543 5d ago

The Yamato class battleship is listed at nearly 863 feet in length. 5000 of these stood upright end to end would total over 817 miles. Distance to space is a bit subjective, but Google says 62 miles.

So you'd be well within the range of most low earth orbiting satellites and such.

2

u/Larcya 5d ago

Nah sell the 5000 Yamatos to any steel company and enjoy your hundreds  plus billions.

1

u/Kiyohara 4d ago

Or I could use them to conquer first earth and then Space. I am sure I could arrange to crew the first one from a bunch of anime nerds and people who just want to go to space. The rest can be recruited from my conquests as I will make sure to keep the self destruct command codes to myself.

2

u/Zealousideal_Topic58 5d ago

If we assume that the Y-initial objects don't have to be real, then the Yeti answer just got a lot more concerning.

I’m assuming that’s what they meant.

1

u/MAGA_ManX 4d ago

I'll definitely be on board with that

12

Sounds like 5000 Moskvas but with even less survivability.

5

u/daats_end 4d ago

The pre-nuke steel alone would be worth billions.

2

u/No-Vehicle5447 4d ago

Imagine there's some pre-nuke paint too... Goldmine

7

u/SpazzBro 5d ago

hell yeah

3

u/Paper_Hedgehog 5d ago

You would win whatever the Environmentalist Award is called for repopulating the ocean with 5000 new coral reefs. 🤣

3

u/Helpinmontana 5d ago

Not a lot of resale value on those bad boys.

But I like your style.

8

u/No-Vehicle5447 5d ago

What!?? I'm expecting to receive those with the crew of 15 million Japanese dudes, which will turn those 325 million tons of scrap metal in my very own japanese car manufacturer

10

u/No-Vehicle5447 5d ago

You aren't thinking business. Every yamato has 3000 something Japanese people in it, and a whole lot of scrap metal. That's 15 million Japanese hard working people.

I'm gonna make them build cars dude.

2

u/Passing4human 5d ago

And build a pontoon bridge from Key West to Cuba!

I don’t know about that. (Yes I know this is a joke.

1

Roughly $12.5 billion considering they were 130 billion yen in 2019. Nice.

1

u/RogerEpsilonDelta 5d ago

They make great coral reefs

1

u/Sufficient-Law-6622 5d ago

Great answer.

1

u/otter5 5d ago

but like they are not usable to you... and the goverment would just confiscate. Might pay you but youre not getting most the value of them

3

u/TheBalrogofMelkor 5d ago

No one's confiscating anything from the man with 5000 Yamato class battleships!

2

u/otter5 5d ago

how many people does it take to operate one of those?

3

u/No-Vehicle5447 5d ago

3000 racist japanese. So of they gave me the ships with their crews I'd have 15 million japanese dudes

3

u/otter5 5d ago

Nah that’s wish man. You just got 5000 docked ships rusting away

1

u/No-Vehicle5447 5d ago

How much is the scrap steel this days? I've 325 million tons of it

1

u/otter5 5d ago

You get some money for sure. But you getting pennys on the dollar. Cause you can’t afford the taxes, theft, and dock fees

1

u/No-Vehicle5447 5d ago

Let's say i get one penny for every metric ton of steel. I'm now a millionaire (modest) with 3 million something dollaroos. I'll settle for that.

0

u/otter5 5d ago

You get millions. Sure. But that a giant headache, if the government doesn’t confiscate eminent domain it. But sure seems like there is far better 5000x options if all you want is money

1

u/Pho3nixSlay3r 5d ago

Where would you even put them?

4

u/No-Vehicle5447 4d ago

Circling the south pole. Mus protek the pengin 🐧

1

u/100percent_right_now 5d ago

Placed end to end that would stretch 1/5th the way across the Atlantic. With 4 like minded friends you could make a pretty crazy blockade. Suez would get real busy.

1

u/No-Vehicle5447 4d ago

Someone said i can reach low orbit if o stack them up. I'm tempted

1

u/sexquipoop69 5d ago

Yamato yamoto

1

1

1

5000 Yorktown Class Aircraft Carriers,

I'll see myself out.

1

u/EelTeamTen 4d ago

1

u/hry84 4d ago

5000 Yamato class Battleships

The military would take those away, or try killing you.

1

u/ScrewWorkn 4d ago

How will you afford to maintain them?

1

u/No-Vehicle5447 4d ago

I will invade Manchuria, Korea and the Philippines

1

u/Kind-Comfort-8975 4d ago

5000 Yorktown class aircraft carriers laugh at you.

1

u/ProfessionalLong302 4d ago

That starts with an F

1

u/IJustLostMyKeyboard 4d ago

5000 Yamato’s from one piece letsssss goooooooo

1

u/ErlAskwyer 4d ago

Jesus Christ that could probably rival any navy no?

1

u/Gotanypaint 4d ago

Can I change the spelling of Iowa to Yiowa? My 5000 Yiowas will defeat your 5000 Yamatos 🤣

1

u/riltjd 4d ago

Poof you now have 5000 yamato class battleships, but keyring size.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Poet_51 4d ago edited 4d ago

The Yamato absorbed enormous amounts of time, money, material and manpower that could have been put to better use elsewhere. It was a logistical nightmare to support at sea and its anti-aircraft defenses (as originally conceived) were something of an after-thought.

1

u/Sme4 3d ago

Steel produced before the atomic bomb tests have a low background radiation which makes it highly desirable for medical equipment which are sensitive to background radiation. If you had 5,000 Yamato class Battleships then you could easily establish yourself as the world’s foremost provider of low-background steel.

1

u/No-Vehicle5447 3d ago

Same happens with pre-nuke paint. It's highly sought after to make undetectable art forgeries.

I'm disgustingly rich mate.

1

u/KidMcC 3d ago

Gosh, I’ve read about how hard it was to have enough oil for one of these, nevermind 5000 😂

1

u/Mountainhollerforeva 2d ago

That and a time machine would win you the Russo Japanese war!

1

u/SoftlySpokenPromises 5d ago

You'd effectively have the only ship-to-ship mass fleet in existence, and at a scale that world domination would be very easy as long as you could crew em.

4

u/No-Vehicle5447 5d ago

I expect to receive my Yamatos fully crewed with my 15million Japanese dudes

5

u/Dt2_0 4d ago

Yea, it does not matter how far tech has advanced these days. 5000 crewed and trained battleships is too much for any Navy to handle. US Navy has a CSG striking you? They sink a few and run out of ordinance in a day. You encircle the group, and close in to 18 incher range. China decides to pop off? Sail up to their shore, let them exhaust their ammo and begin pounding their ports and shipping.

With 5000 Yamatos, you can have them dispersed enough that a nuke would only take out a single ship. You could singlehandedly tank much of the world's nuclear stockpile (ICBMs have a hard time hitting ships, and good luck with deconfliction, and airbursts are terrible at sinking ships anyways, so spray down the ship and tow it somewhere safe to cool off). The only real threat is subs, but even they have limited ammo.
