It's also oddly cathartic knowing that the boat can't punish some other poor bastard. My family has owned a series of boats over the past 30 years. Whenever you sell a boat, the sense of relief you feel is tempered by the guilt you feel for the buyer who is inheriting all those problems. Good luck, buddy. You're gonna need it.

Scale is a hell of a thing.
Another way to see the huge difference between $1m and $1b:
Let's say you made $1/second (which is an insanely good salary, $3600/hr), and you earned this not just business hours, but 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Earning $1m would take you less than 12 days. Earning $1b would take you over 31 years.

Any online calculators I quickly searched do not allow anywhere near 5000 years and I’m on my phone, not my computer.
The notecard math though says at 4% interest you will double your money every 18 years leading to you doubling it a little over 277 times.
If you have $1.00 now you will end around 1084 which puts you well above the 1080 theorized atoms in the known universe. Not a bad amount of cash.

Yttrium-90 microsphere treatments. It's a selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) that can be used to treat liver cancer and colorectal cancer. It is around $20,000 per dose. One patient may need multiple doses.
Donating 5,000 of these to a few key hospitals could do a lot of good for the world.

5,000 Yersin mega yachts
Over $87M apiece. I'd sell 4,500, then use the remaining 500 as the largest fleet of yachts that offer free yacht adventures to those who help clean up the ocean on their trips. A couple hundred would be devoted to helping coral seed the reefs.

You could drop the price to 100k. I imagine many relatively wealthy people would drop 100k for a yacht like that. Sell most of them, and you're close to $500 million
→ More replies (2)138
u/az116 3d ago
A yacht that costs $87 million, would cost almost $10 million dollars a year to run. A person who could only afford a $100k yacht, wouldn't even be able to afford to run it for a week, and in actuality wouldn't even be able to afford to take ownership of it.
I guess there are some retired people with $200 million+ that might find it hard to pass up a deal like that, but not 4,500 of them.

5000 tons of yttrium metal, valued at ~$30/kg, should theoretically be worth $136,077,720. However, only 8k-12k tons of yttrium oxide is produced annually, and from that only a few tons of yttrium metal is produced each year by reducing yttrium fluoride to a metal sponge with calcium magnesium alloy, so I'd imagine the spot price of yttrium metal would decrease significantly by flooding the market with 5k tons all at once.
However, if I sold it off gradually in my life time I bet I could still net at least ~$50 million (that's a guess, if someone wants to do the math to get the actual figure.) That's probably what I'd go with.
